Transboundary Waters and the Environment

The National Department of State Borders and Boundaries is an advisory agency of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that oversees and monitors transboundary water resources with neighboring countries.

Transboundary Waters

According to DFL No. 83/1979 Article 2(d), the National Department of State Borders and Boundaries is an advisory agency of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that oversees and monitors transboundary water resources. Based on its jurisdiction this agency carries out, among others, the following tasks and activities:

  • Monitoring and oversight of laws, agreements, and domestic and international decisions in connection with shared water resources.
  • Promoting good relations and coordination with neighboring countries and national and international institutions, in relation to transboundary water resources.
  • Monitoring and following up on cases of national interest.

Environment

Since 2018, the National Department of State Borders and Boundaries is kept informed of projects located in Chile’s border areas that are entered into the Environmental Impact Assessment System, as established by Environmental Assessment Service Directive No. 181275/2018.
